Slow Dance
I wasnât sure exactly how to handle this. Iâd seen this sort of thing happen in the movies plenty of times. The hero goes up to the girl he wants and pushes the competition out of the way. Maybe threatens the person dancing with his girl.
Only this wasnât a movie. This wasnât some story where a happy ending was guaranteed. This was real life where if I assaulted someone to get at âmyâ girl then there was a good chance Iâd end the evening with a visit to the local police station and maybe even have to come back down here in a month or so for a court date.
I didnât want any of that. I just wanted to let Michelle know that I wanted her. That I needed her in the worst way. That she was the best friend Iâd ever had, the best thing that ever happened to me, and I wanted to take things to the next level.
I figured her dragging me out to a lesbian bar and our conversation over dinner were pretty good indications that she was interested as well. I just had to make the move.
And I had no idea what the hell I was going to do once I got up there. Not that I had much time to think about it. One moment I was moving through the jostling crowd of barely dressed women and the next I was face to face with Michelle who I could see was doing her best to keep her partner from putting her hands all over her.
I hadnât been able to see that through the crowd earlier. Now that I saw this girl getting handsy with my best friend I got pissed off.
âHey, canât you see sheâs not interested?â I asked.
The girl looked at me and laughed. Laughed!
âGet lost lady,â she said. âYou had your chance at the bar and you didnât take it.â
Michelle fixed me with a look that Iâd never forget. A look that said she didnât want anything this girl was offering. A look that begged me to save her from this girl. Who was I to deny a look like that?
So I moved without thinking. Stepped up to the girl and pushed her away. She went stumbling back into some people dancing around us. A few of them shot us irritated glances and then went right on dancing.
âYou got a problem?â the girl asked, stepping forward. Her hands were balled into fists at her side and I felt dizzy. I couldnât believe it. Iâd gone my whole life without getting into an actual fight. I didnât think I was that kind of person and now I was going to get in a fight in a lesbian bar in a strange vacation town to defend my best friendâs honor of all things.
Talk about sentences I never thought Iâd have running through my mind before I came on this vacation!
There was nothing for it though. Iâd started something and this girl looked like sheâd be more than happy to finish it.
